Welcome back and hello 2025!

time to read:

1–2 minutes

After a verrry long hiatus* from blogging here, I am back! I am taking on some new roles and priorities that are allowing me to spend more energy on my long-time focus areas of mentoring and advising, especially for students learning how to read, write, and do research. One new effort you will notice here is my academic editing consulting I am now doing alongside my main research and teaching work with UF.

I plan to share my thoughts and expertise here on my lab’s published research, my ideas for change in academia, and academic editing news. Some of the ideas for future posts I am thinking of writing include:

  • recent accomplishments of current INIT lab students and alumni
  • my philosophy of mentoring and success
  • the myriad ways academia is like a toxic relationship
  • mentoring is infrastructure
  • (inter)national debates and trends in the computing/CHI community
  • how to find an editor
  • tips for advisors and advisees
  • academic editing resources and tips
  • common woes in Microsoft Word publishing (and how to fix them!)
  • what is the editing process like?
  • crafting the perfect abstract
  • …and more!

Do you have thoughts or requests for topics? Let me know in the comments, or drop me a line!

Details on new papers and grants will still be posted when available at the INIT Lab blog.
